What is a Press Brake?

A press brake, sometimes called a brake press, is a manufacturing machine used to bend and fold sheet metal into various angles and shapes. It does this by clamping the metal between a punch and a die and applying force to achieve the desired bend.

The bending Process of a Press Brake

At its most basic, a press brake has a slide with a punch that presses the material being processed into a die. The material is then bent to an angle that corresponds to the angle of the die or is formed based on how deeply the punch presses it into the die. Press brakes can be powered mechanically (a large flywheel turns a crankshaft), hydraulically, electrically, or by a combination of these processes. Press brakes can also be operated manually or by numerical control (CNC) control.

Manual press brakes require manual setup to bend a sheet of metal into the desired shape angle by angle at a time. CNC press brakes can be pre-programmed to make multiple different bends in a sheet of metal at once, completing a complete part, rather than just bending one angle. Regardless of the type of press brake, a V-shaped blade (called a punch) is used to apply enough pressure to the sheet metal to bend it against the die. These machines can bend sheet metal from a few inches to several feet long.

Whether the slide of the press brake moves up or down, both methods can produce the same sheet metal parts, and there is no limit to the design of the part to fit either machine.

Types of Press Brakes

Manual Press Brakes

Press brakes originally started out as manual operations. Before major changes, press brakes were all manually operated. Manual press brakes were once the most common, and at that time it was simply called a sheet metal bender. All dimensions and angles were set manually by workers. This required operators to master its complex mechanical principles and nuances, as automation was not available at that time. In addition, due to the difficulty of operation, manual press brakes were used for mass production once all angles were set. This saved a lot of time by avoiding repeated changes to the machine settings. The cost of using this machine is naturally lower, but it is not as efficient in a dynamically changing environment. If you need to work with sheet metal at different angles and sizes, then a manual press brake is too inefficient to be worth using.

Hydraulic Press Brakes

Perhaps best known for their hydraulic system, hydraulic press brakes offer a number of advantages over manual press brakes. Hydraulic press brakes use a system of hydraulic cylinders to drive the slides to work. As a result, workers are able to have better control and achieve better results than with manual press brakes. This type of press brake has a large tonnage, far exceeding that of manual press brakes. It can bend sheets up to 8 meters long and has a pressure of up to around 1,200 tons. It can also be top-moving, while some other press brakes are only bottom-moving. Despite this, hydraulic press brakes cannot be operated beyond their rated tonnage. This type of press brake has a wide range of applications, not just limited to large industrial production jobs, but also specialized processing. As a more flexible option, many companies have a place for hydraulic press brakes in their production lines, especially because this machine is cheaper than its more modern counterparts. However, it has the disadvantage of running continuously, which means that it consumes electricity even when it is idle.

CNC Press Brakes

CNC press brakes are mainly electric and are relatively new compared to other types. Instead of using hydraulics, this type of press brake uses servo motors to generate the pressure required for bending. Its design is user-friendly, simple to operate, and even its modern exterior design is more aesthetically pleasing. To use a CNC press brake, the operator only needs to enter all the original data, such as the number of pieces, bending angle, sheet size, etc. Once everything is set up, the computer and machine will do the rest. Not surprisingly, these press brakes are more productive than other press brakes. After all, one operator can operate multiple machines at the same time and still have time to do other things after the initial setup is completed. One operator and multiple machines can produce significant output, and the output will be even higher if the number is increased. All of these machines have their own advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantage of CNC press brakes is that they are expensive. But the investment may be worth it because, unlike hydraulic press brakes, CNC press brakes only consume energy when they are actually working, which means it has higher output and lower operating costs. However, hydraulic press brakes still have higher tonnage than these electric machines.

How to Choose the Right Type of Press Brake for Your needs?

Manual press brake

If your production scale is small, the processing task volume is not large, and the processing accuracy requirements are not particularly high, the manual bending machine is a good choice. For example, some small hardware processing shops occasionally need to perform simple bending operations on a small amount of metal sheets. The manual bending machine has low cost and relatively simple operation, which can meet such basic needs.

In addition, if your budget is limited, the lower purchase cost of the manual bending machine can also reduce economic pressure. However, since it requires manual setting of size and angle, the production efficiency is low, and the technical requirements for operators are high, it is not suitable for large-scale, high-precision production tasks.

Hydraulic press brake

When your processing material is large in size and thick in thickness, and requires a large bending force, the large tonnage advantage of the hydraulic bending machine can be fully reflected. Like some large steel structure manufacturing companies, they need to bend thick steel plates. The hydraulic bending machine can bend plates up to 8 meters long and the pressure can reach about 1,200 tons, which can easily handle this kind of work.

At the same time, if your production tasks are somewhat diverse, the hydraulic bending machine is more flexible and can be used not only for large-scale industrial production, but also for specialized processing. Moreover, it is relatively cheap compared to more modern CNC bending machines. But it also has disadvantages. It consumes more electricity when running continuously, and it consumes energy even when it is idle.

CNC press brake

If your production tasks require extremely high precision and efficiency, CNC bending machines are undoubtedly the best choice. For example, electronic equipment manufacturers need to perform precision bending on metal sheets to meet the high precision requirements of products. CNC bending machines generate pressure through servo motors and cooperate with computer automation control to accurately perform various complex bending operations.

One operator can operate multiple CNC bending machines at the same time, which greatly improves production efficiency. Although its purchase cost is high, it only consumes energy when it is actually working. In the long run, the operating cost is low. Considering the comprehensive production benefits and costs, it is worth investing in large-scale, high-precision production needs.
