What is A Press Brake

The Core Component of a Press Brake

Slide (Ram)

The slide is the moving part of the CNC press brake machine on which the punch is mounted. It moves in the vertical direction (Y-axis) to provide the force required to bend the metal.

Controlled by a numerical control system, the ram is able to reach a specific position precisely to meet the requirements of different bending operations. In addition, the slide is equipped with independent Y1 and Y2 axes, which regulate the possible imbalance of the machine’s main slide (in the case of a servo hydraulic press brake, they correspond to the different strokes that can be executed by the hydraulic cylinders).

 

Bench / Bed

The Bench is the stationary part of the machine located underneath the crossbeam, where the molds are mounted. For sheet metal press brakes with a width of 2 m (6 ft) and above, the table is usually equipped with a deflection compensation system to counteract the deformation of the beam during the process.

 

There are many different versions of deflection compensation systems used by different manufacturers, based on different design philosophies, or for specific types and series of machines. Among these, hydraulic deflection compensation systems can achieve very good results. In this system, several high-pressure, low-flow hydraulic cylinders are mounted inside the machine table, and during the pressing process they generate a reaction force from below, thus compensating for the deflection of the frame.

 

Lateral Frames

Lateral frames are also known as side plates or rack shoulders and they determine the width of the machine frame. Lateral frames may vary from one type of CNC press brake machines to another. For example, on stainless steel press brake bending machines with synchronized hydraulics, there is usually a gap between the side frames, called a “throat”, so that plates wider than the distance between the shoulders or columns can be fed into the machine frame for processing.

 

Punch

A punch is a tool that replicates the desired bending profile and is in direct contact with the sheet metal. Punches come in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate different bending angles and materials.

 

For example, for workpieces that require a small angle of bend, a sharp-edged punch will be used; whereas for thicker metal materials, a stronger, larger punch may be required.

 

Die

A die is the stationary counterpart of a punch that provides the shape to be formed for metal bending. It can be a simple V-die for basic bending or a more complex shape for specific contours.

 

V-dies are the most common type, allowing different angles and sizes of bends to be made by varying the angle and width of the V-groove, while complex shaped dies are used to produce workpieces with special structures.

 

Clamping System

The purpose of the clamping system is to securely hold the sheet metal during the bending process, ensuring accuracy and preventing the sheet from slipping.

 

It can adjust the clamping force according to the different thickness and shape of the plate, so that the plate will always maintain a stable position in the bending, so as to ensure that each bending can achieve the desired accuracy.

 

Numerical Control System (CNC)

The CNC system is the core part of the press brake bending machines. It is an operator interface device that allows the operator to program machine motion sequences through direct parameter/program entry or offline programs (usually created by the technical department based on instructions from production management).

 

Typically, CNCs offer a variety of setup/input options, such as numeric or graphic modes. Numeric mode requires the operator to enter the data for the desired part directly into the appropriate fields on the program screen, while graphic mode is easier to use, especially for the non-specialized operator, and requires the use of 2D or 3D graphics to show the shape of the desired end product as well as the bending sequence.

 

Sheet Metal Supports

Sheet Metal Supports are usually optional. If the supports are fixed and slide on the guides, their function is simply to support heavy and/or bulky workpieces during the machining process.

 

In the case of movable (follower) supports, they are used to “accompany” or follow the movement of the plate as it oscillates as a result of bending and forming. They work whether the sheet is moving up or down.

 

Rear Backgauge

A rear backgauge is used to ensure that the bend is correctly positioned on the part to be machined. It usually consists of a crossbeam on which two or more “stop fingers” (backstop blocks) are mounted.

 

These stop fingers are able to move laterally to find the correct position, thus ensuring that each bend is precisely positioned in the specified position on the sheet.
